SHUGRUE CLOBBERS THE INCUMBENT, WHAT’S HERNAME.
After Andrea Harrington gave a four-year-long seminar in “How to Botch the Opportunity of a Lifetime,” she followed up with “How to Lose An Election,” a course that ran for months in 2022. The first course was overenrolled. This year’s class, however, couldn’t find nearly enough students. Having sat through the drudgery and disaster of the four-year fakery, no way they were sticking around this time.
THE PLANET shares the D.A.’s “How to Lose an Election” cheat sheet with the 40 Core Principles:
- Be clueless, tone deaf, and unable to confront political and operational realities.
- Pretend everything is great (especially AFTER you get clobbered). You know, the “vibrant and dynamic” approach.
- Live in an isolated fantasy world.
- Believe things are as you wish not as they are.
- Ignore the reality that everyone around — at least those with more than five working brain cells — knew: Rowboats can’t match tsunamis.
- Duck all debates except those that are rigged and guaranteed not to press when you refuse to answer a question or state a lie.
- Show that you’re too frightened of certain, enormously popular bloggers who dare to call you out for what you are.
- Continue the coward’s approach with the only local daily newspaper. Badmouth the paper’s publisher, editors, and reporters.
- Dismiss critics as “racist and misogynist.”
- Refuse media requests to antagonize the press.
- Speak only to fawning kiss-ups.
- Limit public appearances. Especially avoid any venue, large or small, where someone might ask you an honest, unrehearsed question.
- Hold secret meetings of the kind the mayor of the region’s largest city did with her appointed, stacked committee to dish ARPA money to “friends.”
- Consistently play the race and gender cards.
- Hire outside ringers who don’t understand the local electorate.
- Refuse to listen to wise counsel.
- Issues statements through a paid flack that you hired under shady circumstances while he/she was posing as a reporter covering your campaign.
- Do not make direct statements to the press and public.
- Appear only at photo-ops.
- Hold no press conferences.
- Lie, lie, and continue to lie.
- When caught, deny, deny, deny … then lie some more.
- Have zero experience in your chosen field. This might be the No. 1 factor.
- Dismiss anyone in your office who knows more than you.
- Dismiss anyone in your office who refuses to break the law.
- Dismiss anyone from your office who shows integrity, honesty, and independence.
- Hire political cronies.
- Upon attaining office, run it as a political headquarters.
- Fire anyone who doesn’t knuckle under.
- Hire talentless lackeys after creating new positions for them, especially if they have conflicts of interest with other public service responsibilities such as city council or licensing board.
- Do not provide training or mentoring for green assistant D.A.s.
- Try to bury embarrassing incidents such as reckless driving and tax problems.
- When you get caught, blame others.
- Adhere to the personal credo: “Nothing is ever your fault.”
- Refuse to take responsibility for mistakes. Always blame others.
- Act like a petulant, whiny little girl/boy when things don’t go your way.
- Develop a hide that is oversensitive and wafer-thin.
- When things go bad, don’t rally the team; instead, throw temper tantrums and best of all, cry crocodile tears.
- Do not under any circumstances act like a leader.
- Make fine whine out of sour grapes.

Given their respective challenges, Tim Shugrue and Tom Bowler ran perfect campaigns. Hindsight tells us this but, truth be told, we knew it as Campaign ’22 deepened.

I wouldn’t call Alf a dark horse—–more a southern end of a north bound horse.
There was nothing “preposterous” about the notion that you supported Barbalunga. What is actually preposterous is that you are now trying to walk away from your own words, posted every time the topic of the Sheriff’s election came up on this blog. Your followers know exactly what they saw in print. You can tap dance all you want, but people don’t like it when you try to deceive them. It’s dishonest.
That’s why Alf didn’t have a chance. There’s a big difference between coming out “hitting hard” and serving up an almost daily barrage of misinformation and easily verifiable lies. As the campaign manager, my job, among other things, was to stay on top of his press releases. However, I actually stopped reading them when he posted the one about the missing car from the Sheriff’s Office that was found in Florida, with a picture of a Berkshire County Sheriff’s car photoshopped on a beach. Yet, Planet Valenti actually posted that nonsense rather than calling him out for his complete foolishness.
Campaign followers would send me copies of subsequent press releases with alarming headlines from the Barbalunga team, and I would send back one word: IGNORE.
What you didn’t post was also very significant. For example, when Barbalunga wrote the complete lie about state election officials watching the Berkshire County election for fraud – a lie that was so easily uncovered – you did not offer one word of opinion. To me, deceiving voters is disqualifying. Barbalunga should never ask for voter support ever again.
Above all, you and Barbalunga dismissed Sheriff Bowler as a “roly-poly” good guy. You missed what the majority of voters knew …. That Sheriff Bowler was the unusual combination of a very skilled and competent professional who also happened to be a genuinely good man. His reputation was very well known in this community. I witnessed the respect, admiration and sheer love that people have for their sheriff on the campaign trail every day. I suspect that you and Alf hold people like him in contempt.
Thank you to the many posters on this site who questioned your glowing words for the Barbalunga campaign. As campaign manager, I monitored this site frequently. But once I see this posted in its entirety, I will never be back. Dan, go ahead and take your best shot. I’ll never see it.

She’s so full of it, and clearly isn’t interested in your words, Dan, because she can’t handle the truth. That’s why she didn’t read Alf’s press releases.
If Shugrue had ran for Sheriff and issued the same press releases, it would have been over for Bowler.
Donna didn’t have much to do in this campaign. Her brother came in as the overwhelming favorite. The only thing Donna could do was muck it up for her beloved little brother. When she tried doing that, Pudge reeled her in, which was the wise thing to do. Donna didn’t issue press releases except in rebuttal. Alf ran a barrage campaign, which was his only shot. Without that approach, he likely would have been beaten by an even greater margin. He issued releases that were, on the whole, well researched if at times exaggerated for rhetorical purposes. Pudge could handle the heat, but his family and more excited followers couldn’t. They were strangely overwrought emotionally even as they won! THE PLANET provided an honest and fair coverage not only of the campaign’s factual aspects but also its tone and feel. We did so dispassionately and accurately. The even more amazing part is how some of the sheriff’s inner circle remain so angry, even after Pudge’s huge victory! That’s an interesting political case study in itself, worth of a master’s thesis that no one will read. In contrast, Alf himself took full responsibility for the loss. He didn’t throw anyone under the bus. He and his team have been gracious in defeat. Of course, the ones whose minds are made up with cite this comment of THE PLANET as further “proof” that we were secretly paid off or some wild conspiracy theory to that effect. Lordy, lordy. What do you do with that kind of “argument?” You simply thank them and move on. With us, nothing is ever personal in politics. That much we can and do control. Other people’s reactions? Nothing in our control, God bless ’em.

You know, that’s a sad admission, especially for a former newspaper employee, were you a journalist?
You ignored real, genuine information Barbalunga was sharing about the activities of the Sheriff’s office, like poor education and facility audits, wasted taxpayer funds on state cars and gas cards, and you told his followers to ignore it too, and that just tells us you simply wanted to win, at all costs, and you don’t actually care about improving that office for the taxpayer and inmates.
That’s really unfortunate.
It wouldn’t have changed the outcome of the election if you did read the press releases, but you might have understood why people were voting against the Sheriff, and how he might do a better job in the future.
I read every one, like the poor education audit from 2019 that Sheriff Bowler received, and the ones about the people who died during his abstinence program that the Eagle never reported on, the patronage hires from the police who get hired and retire with a pension a short time later, the gender discrimination lawsuits because the Sheriff didn’t listen to women who claimed sexual harassment and retaliation…
You know, the cars was a funny one, the image was stupid, it was over-the-top, but it did show how ludicrous it was that a car was in Florida… I do know some employees there, and they have been talking about that car that went for Florida for years, and who supposedly had it, but regardless of that, both the number of cars out there being driven by staff on the taxpayer’s dime, and the use of gas cards, is upsetting to those of us who pay taxes.
That’s wasteful spending.
I don’t think people hold the Sheriff in contempt for being a good man, I think people who know about the mistakes, and the favortism and the other stuff, are simply upset about that. He is not a perfect guy, he’s a typical male politician, no better than Barbalunga would be, or anyone else, ultimately.
In one of the press releases you didn’t read, Barbalunga shared two recent lawsuits against the Sheriff, and it’s clear from reading the deposition excerpt Alf shared, that the Sheriff did not take the time to get the women’s side of the story after they complained of gender discrimination, he listened to the men and fired them.
That’s the typical response of a non-woke male executive leader in many situations, and I don’t think the Sheriff would have done that, as a good person, if his trust wasn’t blindly placed in his employees. It makes you realize, the Sheriff, as nice as he is, and no one doubts that, he’s making mistakes because his employees have issues.
You can read the transcript Alf had shared. It was clear the Sheriff didn’t really pay the women much attention and just fired them when the men said to fire them. As a woman, I would think you would agree a man should listen to a woman if she says she was sexually harassed and discriminated against, and then retaliated against.
I think Alf’s strategy for this campaign wasn’t successful, it wasn’t even that professional, but the information he shared about an office that people don’t pay attention to was eye-opening, like Jeanne Kempthorne’s letter about Harrington’s office, we got to know the inner workings and dysfunctions, and then you don’t see it the same anymore. Alf’s way of sharing his message wasn’t effective, but the facts in the message caught my attention.
That election fraud thing was clearly blown out of proportion. Someone on THIS site posted they were voting multiple times for Shugrue and Bowler, we all saw it, it got a lot of likes, and it was probably in jest, but Alf apparently reported it, as he should have (I asked around, people agree it should have been reported).
Should a campaign volunteer have posted it on Facebook, no, was it worded properly, no, but it was taken down. Then I saw the Sheriff’s niece’s post a screenshot of it after it was taken down, and it was her post that was used to create controversy in the Eagle, not Alf’s. And, do you really believe that Alf posts on Facebook by himself? And if he didn’t make the post, himself, should he be held accountable?
Molly Colvin posted lies on Facebook, we saw those, she retaliated agaisnt a Sheriff employee who wrote a letter to the Editor supporting Alf and called him a convicted felon when he is not, should Sheriff Bowler be held responsible for that? No. The Sheriff is responsible for misleading the voters about Franklin County sending women to Chicopee, though. He made it seem like Franklin was failing, that is not the case.
I have to tell you, for those of us who watched this debate, Bowler ran good campaign, or you rather ran a good campaign, and it was clear he was going to win, but this self-righteousness is too much. I would visit Alf’s Facebook site and it was all attacks by Bowler’s supporters, I would visit the Sheriff’s site, and it was “Alf lies again”, and ‘attacking Alf” and “next stop, White House for Bowler” posts.
But Alf shared real genuine information, and you and your supporters didn’t care, and that was a disservice to this community and the inmates in the prison, because a poor education and poor health department audit, for example, are not examples of success, and we deserve better.
You must be the person on Alf’s team that made the post. You’re defending that voter fraud post way too much.

The press releases I read were all verifiable, including the one where it looks like the Sheriff may have lied under oath. The Sheriff has deceived the voters too, I guess he is now disqualified from future office.

I do not know if Alf could do a good job as sheriff, but I respect him for pointing out Pudge’s failures, no one else was willing to. That’s largely a ceremonial elected office, and the public deserves to know everything Alf shared with the public, and yes, Donna, we could read past spin, and see facts. You didn’t need to keep claiming Alf was a liar all the time.
Pudge supporters by and large are nice, honest hardworking people, but they don’t know what they don’t know, and I respect Alf for trying to break that wall of blissful ignorance.
The Sheriff is doing a mediocre job, he’s human, he makes mistakes, but anyone who points that out is attacked. Even Donna attacked you for simply sharing info and stating an opinion that Alf ran a decent campaign. That’s bully behavior, it’s like extreme patriotism, like not idolizing Pudge is un-American. That’s scary. That’s cultish. I agree it deserves a thesis; maybe if the Sheriff ever gets his educational offerings going again and reconnects with Williams, they can discuss it during inmate philosophy class.
My personal hope, a female inmate sent to Chicopee and can’t see her family is found innocent, goes on to a rewarding law enforcement career, gets elected as our first female Sheriff, and does the job Alf claimed he would do.

Incumbent Sheriff Tom Bowler defeated his “All in the Family” challenger Alf Barbalunga, who will run again in 2028 after “Pudge” retires with a public pension plus perks that rivals a commoner winning the huge state lottery jackpot. Paul Marxism and the ultimate career politician John Barrett III both won their respective primary elections that will guarantee them at least two more years as do-nothing backbenchers in Boston. All of these establishment politicians will make over 6-figure public pay plus perks in 2023 except for Andrea Harrington, unless she finds a new public position next year. My question is: “What do the common people and taxpayers really have to gain by paying all of the useless corrupt career politicians such huge public salaries for more “Business as usual”?

I knew Harrington was all done this Spring when very little real relatives expressed that they felt they were deceived by Harrington and her campaign. Bowler and Shugrue are smart politicians, Alf and Harrington not so much. Bowler gives his campaign funds to charity, for example, it’s smart, it’s not his money, but it accomplishes good, and people remember it. Shugrue has the kids place, he is good with divorces, defending criminals, when he says he won’t let people with guns escape prosecution people believe him, never mind he has defended people with gun charges for years, but these guys got game, pretty hard to beat.

I went to the same school with both of these men, Shugrue and Bowler and they are good guys. I agree with Timothy Shugrue that you can’t ignore the small stuff when it comes to crime like shoplifting and property damage below a certain amount because, if you do, this will lead to more problems in the future. He cites the criminal as being saved from a life of crime if they are stopped early, but I also say that the public is being saved from the potential future crimes of these people if they are not stopped early.
Pittsfield school administration won’t deal with the bully threats in our schools.Maybe Shugrue could start by telling Mr Curtis and the school Safety administrator that bullying is a CRIME in the Pittsfield school system.

I saw a lot of double standards during this campaign, and I have no desire to watch another Sheriff race after this one. I don’t think Alf was ever ready for prime time, but the information he shared was pretty accurately sourced, probably from sheriff employees, especially that 2020 education audit, the discrimination lawsuit, and by all accounts, the Sheriff needs to do better over the next 6 years, not to win an election, because I think he will win in 2028 even if he stays home and plays with his grandkids 24/7 for the next 6 years, but to actually reduce crime.
I think he needs to do better by these inmates, and to do better by the taxpayer, I think he needs to watch how he spends our taxpayer money and change his ways. We should not pay for his executives who make $180k a year to drive a state car on our dime, and you shouldn’t either. If Alf did that, everyone would scream about how spoiled he is, and how he spoils his buddies on payroll.
I appreciate Alf for exposing what he exposed, even though he lost, and was always going to lose, and I hope the Sheriff does do better, and if you have any influence with him, ask him to, the race is over, ask him to do better, because all he did was raise money this summer, he shared no ideas for the future, he shared no details of how successful his inmate programs are, or how many people re-offend after treatment, and then when he won, he just says, we are going to grow and do more.
I don’t think he even has any new ideas, I think he was sincere, in that moment, that he wants to do more, and I don’t blame you for supporting your uncle, that’s loyalty, but I don’t think he ever had plan, he was just resting on his laurels, and Alf showed us that there had been problems during the last 12 years we never knew about, but should have.
Ask your uncle to get rid of all the state cars, ask him to improve education at the jail, ask him to apologize for all the people who suffered and died during the abstinence program, ask him to listen to women when they say they are harassed, discriminated, or retaliated against instead of just firing them, ask him to bring at least the women who can’t make bail back to Pittsfield so they can see their families and attorneys while they wait for a trial, and so on… ask him to do better.
Alf raised real issues, some of us saw that, including Dan I think, and that’s why he got a few thousand votes. Some paid attention.
Your uncle might be a great guy, but we deserve a better Sheriff, especially for the kind of money he will make for the next term.
I thought Dan did his best to share what seemed valid from Alf’s continual press releases, in the interests of journalism, while the Eagle largely gave the Sheriff a pass. If the Eagle ran a headline, Sheriff fails education audit, we might have seen a different election result.

Tom Bowler did one great thing that I am forever grateful for, which was when he replaced the late-Carmen Massimiano, Jr. as the Berkshire County Sheriff after Tom Bowler won the 2010 election. Mayor Jimmy Ruberto’s brown nose was stuck in Carmen’s dirty behind during his 8 years as Pittsfield’s worst Mayor EVER! Jimmy Ruberto’s letter that he wrote this Summer of 2022 endorsing Alf Barbalunga for Sheriff didn’t help Alf’s candidacy in Lenox and Naples, Florida. I don’t think Jimmy Ruberto’s write-in vote in Naples, Florida helped Alf in the Sunshine State. Over one decade after the failed Ruberto Renaissance, Pittsfield still has excessively high municipal spending in return for Level 5 public schools, substandard municipal services and entrenched one (Democratic) party political corruption with the fictional Mary Jane and Joe Kapanski family always being shafted by the ditch we all have come to hate called predictable Pittsfield politics.
Totally disagree with you. Jim Ruberto was the only mayor that got things done in Pittsfield especially down town and on South Street. He also was the only one that attempted to stop the Spectrum clinic from trying to open on Summer Street. You make a lot of good points my friend, I know your dad but on this one I disagree. Tom Bowler is a good guy also have known him for 30 years working in different roles in the system. The problem is that has been pointed out by Alf and others is the bloat of an over paid management team and the favortism in promations and hiring x ppd to captains which they do not even spend time in the jail 90% of the time. Some one needs to find out just what they are doing for all the money. As I said before the sheriffs departments in Massachusetts are not activate law enforcement but each and every one of them has bought command vehicles, motorcycles, 4 wheelers, horses, cache of weapons. They do not belong on task forces, da’s office you signed up for corrections that is your job if you want to be a cop go be a cop. I was for Andrea the first time as you are aware that the office was very dirty for years and needed to be broken up. Too bad Andrea did a shitty job and has no one but herself to blame. My issue with Tim is how close he is with Bowler now is that a big in for more over paid deputies to be assigned to the da’s office and task forces.

Mayor Linda Tyer has failed in her legal duties by supporting the city’s police department’s outright lie(s). The city administration upheld the lie about the suspect’s distressed state under the law in order to cover their legal liabilities should insurance claim(s) and/or lawsuit(s) present themselves, which is always one of the worst forms of bad bureaucracy due to failed leadership. Berkshire County District Attorney Andrea Harrington’s determination upholding the city’s flawed position on the matter was in error due to the fact that Miguel Estrella was, indeed, a person in distress under the law. There should be a state and/or federal investigation into the Pittsfield Police Department’s fraudulent Use of Force report(s) that stated that Miguel Estrella was not a person in distress under the law.
