THE LOST CITY … AND OTHER REMAINS FROM THE DESK

PLANET VALENTI NEWS AND COMMENTARY

(FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE, MONDAY JUNE 29, 2026) — Clearing off the desk, THE PLANET finds many interesting items on our desk here at the Summer Fortress:

End Game“: President Trump once more threatened to annihilate Iran after the mullahs attacked a British freighter in Hormuz and caused other trouble. This is the “war” that has now “ended” more times than Joan Rivers had facelifts. Fat chance of selling the peace “agreement” worked out a couple weeks ago. Part of the agreement is the U.S. unfreezing billions in Iranian assets, with the provision that the money only be used to buy American agricultural goods. Right. Farm goods such as missiles, explosive drones, and glide bombs.

Author Dan Valenti latest book, SANITY MADE SIMPLE, is available at amazon.com.

Vlad the Bad: Vlad Putin, not to be confused with baseball’s Vlad Guerrero, has been trying to subdue Ukraine since February 2022. Surveying the fighting capabilities of the Russian military, THE PLANET rates the army’s combat effectiveness once step above Liberace and one step below Wayne Newton. Once a superpower, it can’t even bring down a curtain. Still, Russia has a lot of nukes.

Soterocare: The Fed crackdown on fraudulent enrollment and graft has eliminated 3 million grifters from Affordable Care Act health insurance, better know as Obamacare, know in the Secret Squadron as Soterocare. The program included an indefinite “nonpayment grace period” where loafers could simply ignore premiums forever. The Trump Administration ended that grace period. Note it as a tiny win for taxpayers, one that the Massachusetts Matriarchy of Healey-Spilka-Campbell has surely prevented time and again for beleaguered Bay State residents.

How’s That?: Speaking of corruption, how’s Two Petes and Earl governance of the city of Bitchfield, aka Lumpyville, strike you? Do you think it’s working out? Do you want someone of substance tooled a coup?

Loan Ranger: Thank you, President Autopen. Your handlers instituted a policy intended to wipe out student loans. Just vanish them. Poof! After the Supreme Court ruled the plan unconstitutional in 2023, loan payments resumed. … sort of. Seems that more than half of those in debt still “expect” their debt to be forgiven, and they continue to not pay. Some 9.2 million folks are delinquent. More than half of those, rather then paying their bills, took out even more loans in the form of consumer debt. Remember the song? Everything free in America.

Pot Calls Black a Kettle: Gotta give it to Autopen, however. Over the weekend, at some swarmy fundraiser of loons, Smokin’ Joe called Trump “a loser.” Finally. He show some zest! Of course, this is the guy who meekly dropped off the presidential ticket in favor of a lightweight laughing hyena. The Dems are still calculating the damage.

Billions and Billions: California Gov. Gavin Newsom opposed a ballot question that would tax billionaires. Yes. He’s against it, which has pissed off many of his far left supporters. Newsom’s eyes, however, are on the 2028 Democrat presidential nomination. Party leaders, in true Dem fashion, want the tax, even though it will cause countless dollars to flee the state, as has happened in glorious Taxachusetts. This sets up a Dem v. Dem confrontation that will greatly affect the 2028 race. THE PLANET predicts that Newsom prevails, becomes the nominee, faces Marco Rubio, and … wins or loses? What do you think?

The Lost City: Back to loco local, recently THE PLANET walked the lanes west on East Street, up Fenn Street, all the way to a near-deserted North Street. We walked that way countless times in our youth. The blight and neglect was shocking in what was once a clean, respected, and respectable enclave. Hitting the downtown, we faced a barrage of empty storefronts and the walking dead. Where have you gone, Pittsfield?

Do I think Earl and the 2-Pete’s are doing a good job? Answer: It is a con job.

Do I think that inner-city Pittsfield collapsed? Answer: It is a downward spiral of collapse after collapse.

Do I think that the Massachusetts Matriarchy is doing a good job? Answer: Not when it comes to local aid dollars.

Do I think that Joe Biden will help the Democrats in 2026 and 2028? Answer: He helped out his middle-aged son Hunter with a presidential pardon, but old Joe going on 84 is not the same as 1984.

Do I think that Donald Trump is going to make peace with Iran’s extremist regime? Answer: Iran will try to wait out Trump until 2029, and hope for the return of Democrats similar to Obama and John Kerry.

Do I think that student loans are a financial scam? Answer: It is up there with the rest of the worst financial products out there that make most people poorer.

For the fictional Kapanski’s, inflation is high, “One Pittsfield” is spending a record-breaking amount of taxpayer dollars, Boston’s matriarchal state government is under-funding local aid, and the Swamp is spending billions of dollars everyday on endless wars. At least they can avoid North Street.

Hello blogger Dan Valenti,

I asked Google AI: Why are the 2-Pete’s Pittsfield politics are so controversial?

Their combined influence has drawn intense controversy due to a series of high-profile local scandals, polarizing public safety ordinances, and structural battles over governance.

1.) The proposed (failed) encampment ban is the number one illustration of their “War against the underclass” residents of Pittsfield, Mass.

2.) The PHS misconduct legal report and the School Committee’s non-disclosure vote swept institutional failures under the rug.

3.) Scandals and Lawsuits permanently stained Mayor Peter Marchetti’s political capital.

4.) Critics accuse the 2-Pete’s – Marchetti and White – of running a rigid, insular political machine under their “One Pittsfield” tagline.

5.) Pittsfield politics is more divided in 2026 than at any point in recent history due to the Earl and the 2-Pete’s record-breaking municipal spending that results in the 2nd highest Commercial Tax Rate in Massachusetts, along with an older population of homeowners paying excessively high residential taxes and fees.

NOTE: Google AI praises Jon Melle’s alliterative phrase: The 2-Pete’s Pittsfield politics pounds, pummels, pulverizes, punishes people’s purses.

“That is a masterful piece of alliteration! You perfectly captured the tense financial atmosphere surrounding local governance.”

“Your poetic punchline accurately sums up the exact frustrations of local residents watching their city leaders balance public costs against the community’s pocketbooks!”

My alliteration means that there is NO fiscal responsibility in our native hometown of Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

Earl and the 2-Pete’s Pittsfield politics would rather spend limited city resources with their unjust “War against the underclass” residents, cover-up the misconduct at my Alma Mater PHS (Class of 1993), govern by running a rigid, insular political machine under their IRONIC “One Pittsfield” tagline that should instead state: RETRIBUTION, spend as many city tax dollars as they possibly can by being in one of the top of all municipal governments in Massachusetts in over-taxing businesses, while at the same time over-taxing mostly older homeowners, and seeing a city more politically divided in 2026 than at any other time in recent history.

Peter Marchetti ran for Mayor in 2023 based on his financial management experience. In mid-2026, which is 2.5 years of him running Pittsfield City Hall, businesses and residents found out the hard way that he has NO fiscal responsibility managing our tax dollars.

Best wishes,

Jon Melle

Wonder how the Planet is feeling about Timmy “the fixers” prospects?

Roberts and Amy Commie Barrett never fail to fail America.
Is Mitch gone yet? Birthright tourism is alive and well in america, sadly…Bush donors wanted poorly paid workers- Roberts still doing his paymasters bidding.

Iran might be getting thew message, Trump shouldn’t stop the bombing or answer their calls until after the holiday.Japan took a while to understand resistance was futile, fanaticism is hard to cure, but can be accomplished- as Truman proved- with littlke loss of American lives.

Pittsfield blight? Sinking manholes. What is going on? Getting blindsided by sunken manholes popping up here and there unexpectedly. Word is city has been doing the cheap repair on them. These things collapse in short time if not done properly but Waconah park redo for private vendors is sucking up both money and time from essential projects. Focus is on parks and lakes and fun things.

I have to laugh. The street sweepers actually make some streets dirtier. I was behind a broken down one (sweeper) in another town, and the thing was blocking traffic for at least 100 yards, couldn’t see past my bumper it was billowing clouds of dust.

On my street we clean up in front of our homes and that includes plow divers on the grass and would rather do that than wait for it to be done anyway.

One year the city didn’t do our street until August ?

Channel 13 reported it is looking for a seven year old boy who is missing in Menands N Y…then the other story of importance ? Was a missing Iguana in Pittsfield Ma. It also states if you find it don’t grab it by the tail.

Aside…How is Iran complying with the Deal Maker. Reason for pushback? Your deal maker, had to reduce his oil future profits. They’re making billions. Iran is complying.

THE PLANET asked, “Where have you gone, Pittsfield?”
Good question.
Maybe we should start by asking, “Where have all the cops gone?”
Seriously… has anyone noticed?
Shootings. Stabbings. Group fights. Speeding. Cars blowing through red lights, stop signs, crosswalks, and yield signs like they’re merely suggestions. Every week it seems there’s another serious crash or another violent incident.
Yet where is the police presence?
Not after the radio crackles. Before.
Once upon a time, you couldn’t drive across Pittsfield without spotting patrol cars. Officers were visible. People knew they were out there. Their presence alone made people think twice.
Now? Drive by the police station instead. Patrol cars everywhere. Lined up in the lots. Parked along the streets. It’s beginning to look less like a police department and more like a municipal car show.
Maybe that’s the new strategy. If criminals can’t find the cops, the cops can’t find the criminals.
Bold.
Who’s running patrol these days? Because from where the public is sitting, proactive policing appears to have gone the way of the North Street department stores.
The officers all received raises. Benefits improved. Overtime continues. Yet residents are asking a simple question:
What are we getting in return?
People don’t expect perfection. They expect to actually see the people they’re paying to protect their neighborhoods.
And while we’re asking questions…
Where is Chief Maddalena?
Has anyone seen him? At community events? Walking downtown? Giving interviews? Answering residents’ concerns? Returning emails?
It’s like Pittsfield is playing an ongoing game of “Where’s Waldo?” except Waldo occasionally sends out a press release.
Leadership isn’t something you do from behind a closed office door. It’s something people should be able to see.
Because right now, residents see empty storefronts, reckless driving, rising violence, and a downtown that’s struggling to remember what it used to be.
What they don’t see is leadership.
Maybe that’s the biggest missing person case in Pittsfield.

Follow up question is “where is the mayor?” Does he know or care what his cops are doing?

Also why does Mr Marchetti have 30 million dollars of taxpayer money for a private vendor ballpark and yet the kids are now out of school and Tyler street does not have one painted crosswalk. One of the most pedestrian heavy areas of the city. It was sure purdy after it was redone but outside of some plantings the line painting seems unimportant to this mayor. And who the hell is the city councilor for this area that is not banging on the mayor’s door? What is his or her name. Get it out here now. This is inexcusable. Just spent millions of dollars restructuring West street because someone got hit but leaving this place wide open for the dozens of kids up and down the street on their bikes and crossing over to get an ice crem cone. A lawsuit floting in the wings.

Val’s Report Card: Mayor MarchettiEvery employee gets a performance review.
Why shouldn’t the mayor?
After all, he works for us.

Leadership: DA mayor should be visible, accessible and engaged. Instead, residents are asking, “Where’s the mayor?” Leadership isn’t ribbon cuttings and photo ops—it’s showing up when the city needs you most.

Public Safety: D-“Where’s the new Chief?” Shootings. Stabbings. Reckless driving. Group fights. Residents say they rarely see proactive patrols anymore. Police presence alone can deter crime, yet many are wondering where that presence has gone, patrolling has seemed to have stopped the last 6 months.

Downtown: C-Empty storefronts continue to define North Street while businesses struggle to survive. Pittsfield’s heart should be beating stronger than this.

Priorities: DMillions can be found for major projects, yet neighborhoods still wait for basics like visible crosswalks, road markings and routine maintenance. Residents notice what gets funded—and what doesn’t.

Communication: FLeadership requires visibility and communication. Too many residents feel their questions go unanswered and their concerns unheard.

Final Grade: DPittsfield deserves a mayor who leads every day—not just when there’s a camera waiting.

I’m not sure why you’re complaining VV?

You called for “defunding the police,” didn’t you?

Guess what? You got your wish. Sucks, huh?

When the large majority of crime is caused by young the POC nationwide and you (democRATS) called for defunding the police and thought relaxing enforcing the laws was a good idea, we just sat back and shook our heads.

Does the term, “we could have told you,” make sense now?

Not to mention, if I’m a w/m cop, why take a chance of being proactive in patrol and increase your odds of having to possible shoot a Bitchfield Pubic Scohol Skoler and have wingnuts like you picketing outside of my house.

Be careful what you wish for….

Markus, this is becoming a pattern with you.

You spend a lot of time arguing against things people never actually said. You make assumptions, build an entire argument around them, and then congratulate yourself for winning a debate that only existed in your own head.

Show me where I called for abolishing or defunding the police. I’ll wait.

What I’ve said is that Pittsfield deserves visible patrols, proactive policing, accountability, and leadership that gets officers out into the community instead of sitting in the station waiting for the next call.

Those are not the same thing.

And while you’re at it, maybe stop trying to reduce every public safety discussion to race and national political talking points. We’re talking about Pittsfield, not cable news.

You’d probably find yourself being wrong a lot less often if you spent more time reading what people actually wrote instead of assuming you already know what they think.

You’re living proof that confidence and accuracy have never met.

When exactly did I post that I was “quitting” and “never coming back?” I’ll wait. If you’re so sure, post the receipts. We’ll all enjoy the dramatic reading together.

The only reason I haven’t been around is because I was on a fabulous cruise with my handsome white boomer boyfriend. I know… devastating news for your fan club.
Now let’s get to the creative writing portion of your comment.

Andrea Harrington? Where did that come from? I said I worked for a District Attorney’s Office. I never said which one. There are, believe it or not, District Attorney’s Offices outside of Berkshire County. Shocking, I know.

And I hate law enforcement? That’s adorable.
I was law enforcement.

At this point I’m less concerned with your opinions than I am with your source material, because whatever you’re reading isn’t anything I’ve actually written.

You’re not arguing with me, Markus. You’re arguing with the imaginary Vendetta you’ve invented in your head. She sounds exhausting. Tell her I said hello.

Or thought it was President Roosevelt.

The point was protocol is important , but not mandatory, if immediate action is required.

Good Times Bei Bei suspended for five days (license board ruled with only three members voted 2-1 the kicker was the checker didn’t check and that was that. The lawyers should have told Bei Bei owners to fire the license checker and they would have probably received no suspension but they are good people and pay many taxes also.

Democrats, especially Democrat Socialists, need far larger sources of revenue to pay for all the benefits they think government should supply. They will increase taxes, fees and tax preferences, without end until they destroy wealth. The effect is to reduce if not eliminate all the incentives to create products and services that people value. It is impossible for the middle class, defined as the middle 60% of the income distribution to pay itself a benefit. The money must come from the middle class and be filtered through government which will always take part of it. Politicians who want to buy votes always turn to the “rich” and demand ever more of their wealth. The California wealth tax is a perfect example. No country that has ever imposed a wealth tax has ever found it raised much money. Wealth can’t be measured until there is a transaction and the wealth avoid all transactions in countries with a wealth tax. The wealthy just leave the country or the state.

I’m probably stating facts you all know but evidently California voters don’t know. Massachusetts needs to lower its taxes to raise more revenue for the state but then, everybody reading this probably knows this fact too.

Lumpy should listen to cam Cunningham about turning Morningside school into a police station it’ll save us money he should also learn how to dress like cam. Cam is a very good looking man who makes my pulse race my councilor only shows up to photos ops and does nothing for me.

Better off using Morning Side for Administration Employees and PPS storage facilities. Sell both Mercer and Hibbard Schools. The City of Pittsfield should move the Police Station to Second st. Jail. Time to send the Sheriffs Department packing. They have plenty of room at there empty House of Corrections on Cheshire Road.

The Second Street jail should have been sold as soon as the new jail opened. It’s a shithole like the rest of Shittsfield.

Not a bad idea. Berkshire County doesn’t have a real Newspaper. Only have a Progressive Activist News Letter, regurgitating left wing talking points into the echo chamber that is the Berkshires.

Noticed that Mayor Lumpy and his buddy Morales have another cost efficient idea since the “narrowing” of streets only screwed up many City streets costing them double the money. They evidently have decided not to pave the total width of streets leaving approximaly 10 to 12 feet on each side. Perfect example is the newly paved portion of East Street by the BIC building. Why would they do something like this? It looks terrible and it just a matter of time before potholes start forming.

Speaking of the BIC building, who is the cop that hides his/her cruiser all day in the back of the spare parking lot. What is he/she protecting? Another cop parks by the big swamp in our famous Wahconah Park. What is he/she protecting, the ducks that land in the pond? Or how about the cop that hides way back in the General Dynamics driveway on New York Avenue snoozing, there’s three taxpayer paid cops that should be patrolling the streets. Since Chief Maddelena use to be the head of the Traffic Bureau you would think he would tell these “hiders” to get out and start addressing the speeders, red light runners and unregistered and uninspected cars.

Each cop should have a quota of traffic violations given each shift. If people realize tickets are being given out every day, they possibly would be more aware of their crazy driving, right now it’s just a free for all because there are no cops around.

Just as a warning to all, be aware of the large “ski jump” on West Street right before Eversource Electric, even if you are driving slow it is built so high you go airborne. Another pathetic Morales idea.

The reality is they don’t want tired cops driving around in circles all night on the midnight shift. It’s a recipe for lots of miles on the cars, that then wear out quicker, and tired cops are more likely to have car accidents. Random preventive patrol is practically useless for actually catching a crook in the act, especially on the midnight shift. Ask me how I know.

If they didn’t want “tired cops” why do let them work unlimited details outside of their other hours? Tractor Trailer drivers can only work a certain amount of hours. Makes sense, they could kill innocent people. Police officers have to make split second decisions, with a loaded gun at their side. I guess they have a better Union.

Always wonder too, why is it the Dispatcher sends two police units to a minor accident and then the next thing you know every other police unit states over the radio, I’ll go too. Then there is 5 or 6 cop cars at a fender bender? Why is no police supervisor stopping these additional units? With all the traffic issues going on it seems their services could be used elsewhere. Another Lumpy “It Makes No Sense” decision in Lumpsvillle.

The cops may have been typing reports as most are now done in the crusiers. Or they may have doing nothing so that they don’t get in the shit for doing their job, which is often par for the course now with The War on Cops that Obama started. Or maybe they are decompressing from a bad call, such as a child death, a child rape, animal abuse, a bad car accident, etc.

So, if you are snow plowing those humps do you hit them straight on or do you slant the plow to the right as normal? And should the city have a truck with an extra plow blade following in case the plow disengages and takes out the radiator and undercarriage?

And if the city has been having a hell of a time getting private plow contractors for years now, will all the bump outs and ski jumps make them want to avoid city road plowing even more?

The cops can’t stop speeders because they might nail a gangster who is on the books. Then they end up in court and lots of time and money is wasted figuring out a technicality to spring the dealer.

People are flawed, and so there is no beauty in their hands.
